Bus Rear Advertising UK

The back of the bus is the single most impactful position you can buy. Every driver, cyclist, and pedestrian stuck behind a bus stares directly at your ad, at eye level, often for minutes at a time. Stuck in traffic on the A4? That bus rear is right in your face. No scrolling past it, no skipping it. Campaigns from just £60 per panel for 2 weeks.

What Is Bus Rear Advertising?

Bus rear advertising (also called bus back advertising or rear of bus advertising) puts your ad on the back panel of a bus. It is the most in-demand position on any bus, and for good reason.

Side panels get a glance as the bus goes past. A bus rear sits in your face for as long as you are behind that bus. Drivers, taxi passengers, cyclists, Deliveroo riders, pedestrians crossing behind. They all see it head-on. In stop-start city traffic, that could be 30 seconds, a minute, sometimes longer. No other bus format gives you that kind of dwell time.

Bus rears work on both single-deckers and double-deckers. They run in every UK city with a bus network. London alone has over 9,000 TfL buses. Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow. Over 40,000 buses on UK roads, reaching roughly 93% of the population according to Route data. That is mass reach at a fraction of what you would pay for a static billboard.

The format is brilliant for brand awareness, product launches, and local business promotion. Buses go everywhere. Residential streets, high streets, business parks, shopping centres, school runs. Your rear ad hits different audiences in different locations throughout the day without you lifting a finger.

We will be straight with you: if you only have budget for one bus format, the rear is where we would put it. The visibility data backs that up, and we have seen it play out across hundreds of campaigns.

Why Bus Rear Advertising Works

Bus rears consistently beat supersides and T-sides for recall in Route data. The reasons are obvious once you think about how people actually see buses on the road.

Longest Dwell Time

You are stuck behind a bus in traffic. What do you look at? The ad on the back. In central London, average bus journey speed is about 9mph. That means following traffic is staring at your ad for minutes, not seconds. No other bus format comes close.

Eye-Level for Drivers

Bus rears sit at the exact height of a car driver's eyeline. Not above you like a billboard. Not at your feet. Right there, dead centre, windscreen height. Van drivers, taxi passengers, Uber riders. All looking straight at it.

Completely Unskippable

You can not close it. You can not scroll past it. There is no ad blocker for the back of a bus. If you are behind it, you are looking at it. That is a level of guaranteed attention that digital ads can only dream about.

Moves Through the City

A static billboard sits in one spot. A bus rear travels 20+ different streets a day. Morning: residential areas. Midday: high streets and shopping centres. Evening: commuter routes. Your ad covers ground without you paying for multiple sites.

Works Better at Night

This is a detail most people miss. After dark, headlights from following cars light up the bus rear like a spotlight. It is one of the only OOH formats that actually gets more visible at night. Most formats lose impact. Bus rears gain it.

Serious Value

£60 per panel for two weeks, the same price in London as regionally. That is your brand in front of thousands of people every day. Compare that to what you are spending on social ads that get swiped past in half a second. Honestly, for cost-per-eyeball, this is hard to beat.

Bus Rear Advertising Formats

Three ways to put your brand on the back of a bus. Different budgets, different levels of impact.

Standard Bus Rear

Standard Bus Rear

From £60 / 2 weeks

120cm x 75cm approx.

The workhorse format. A printed panel that fits into the ad frame on the back of the bus. Available on single-deckers and double-deckers, and priced the same in London as regionally. This is what most of our clients book because it is affordable, effective, and available on 2-week cycles. Keep the creative bold and simple. You have got a captive audience.

Mega Rear

Mega Rear

From £5,070 / 20 weeks

150cm x 75cm approx.

Bigger, bolder, double-decker only. The mega rear uses contour-cut vinyl that wraps around the curves of the bus back, covering a much larger area than the standard frame. It properly dominates the rear of the bus. The catch: these run on longer terms, from a 20-week minimum up to 52 weeks, so they are more of a long-term play. If you have the budget and want sustained presence on the road, this is the one.

Full Wrap with Rear

Full Wrap with Rear

From £13,250 + production

Entire bus exterior incl. rear

The full monty. Your brand covers every surface of the bus, including the rear. The back of a fully wrapped bus is essentially an oversized rear ad that no one can miss. Production takes 4-6 weeks because the vinyl needs to be printed, laminated, and installed by specialist fitters. These are booked per bus with a 4-week minimum and the impact is massive.

Bus Rear Advertising Costs

Real rates, not vague ranges. London costs more because of traffic volume and competition for depot space. Regional cities are significantly cheaper.

Standard Bus Rear

Regional (Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds etc)

£60 / 2 weeks

Standard Bus Rear

London (TfL network)

£60 / 2 weeks

Mega Rear (Double-Decker)

National

From £5,070 all-in / 20 weeks

Full Wrap (incl. Rear)

Regional

From £20,000 all-in / 4-wk min

Full Wrap (incl. Rear)

London

From £26,800 all-in / 4-wk min

Standard bus rear prices are media only; print is typically £15 to £25 per panel. Mega rears and full wraps are quoted all-in per bus. January and February are usually cheaper because demand drops after Christmas. September and Q4 book up fast.

Bus Rears vs Other Bus Formats

Supersides and T-sides are solid formats. We book plenty of them. But if a client asks us where to put their money for maximum impact per bus, it is the rear every time. The viewing dynamic is just different.

Highest dwell time of any bus format (Route verified)
Face-on viewing, not a passing side glance
Headlights light it up after dark like a spotlight
Seen by drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians at the same time
Slower traffic = more effective (the opposite of most media)
From just £60 per panel for 2 weeks

Route, the independent UK audience measurement body for out-of-home, confirms what we see in the field: bus rears score highest for visibility among all bus formats. The combination of eye-level placement, face-on orientation, and extended viewing time is hard for any other position on the bus to compete with.

How to Book Bus Rear Advertising

Four steps. We handle the heavy lifting. Most campaigns go from brief to live buses in 2-3 weeks.

01

Brief & Quote

Tell us where you want to be, your budget, and your dates. We come back within 1 hour with depot recommendations and exact costs. No chasing required.

02

Depot Selection

We pick the depots that cover your target postcodes. Each depot serves specific routes. We know which ones hit high streets, which ones cover residential, and which ones to avoid.

03

Artwork & Print

Send us your artwork or we will design it. We handle print production and get the finished panels delivered to the depot. Typical print turnaround is 5-7 working days.

04

Campaign Goes Live

Panels go up at the depot and your buses hit the road. We send you proof of posting photos within a few days of the start date. Then we leave you alone unless you need us.

What Most Agencies Will Not Tell You

A few things worth knowing before you book bus rear advertising. We would rather you went in with your eyes open.

You can not pick specific routes. We get asked this a lot. Bus advertising is booked by depot, not by route. Each depot serves a bunch of routes in a specific area. The buses rotate between routes daily, which actually works in your favour because it spreads your coverage wider. But if you need to be on one specific road only, bus rears are not the right format. A static billboard would be better for that.

Lead times matter. Allow 2-3 weeks from booking to go-live for standard rears. That covers artwork approval, printing, delivery to the depot, and the depot fitting the panels. If you need it faster, tell us up front and we will see what is possible. Full wraps need 4-6 weeks because of the production process.

Keep the creative simple. You have got a captive audience, but they are still reading from a moving vehicle. Big logo, short headline, maybe a call to action. Do not try to fit a paragraph on there. The best bus rears we have seen use no more than 7 words. Let the format do the work.

Seasonal pricing is real. September through November is peak season for OOH. Christmas campaigns get booked early and depot space fills up. January and February are quieter and you will often get better rates or more choice of depots. If your campaign timing is flexible, Q1 is usually the sweet spot for value.

Bus Rear Campaigns That Deliver

We have delivered hundreds of bus rear campaigns. Single-depot local jobs, 50-bus London rollouts, multi-city national campaigns. Agencies, direct brands, entertainment, public sector. The format works across the board.

One recent one: 50 bus rears across 3 London depots for a product launch. The client saw a noticeable spike in website traffic during the campaign and people were posting photos of the bus backs on social. That organic social pickup is a bonus you do not get with most other formats.

“The bus rears looked brilliant on the road. People were taking photos and posting them on social which we did not expect. Monster handled everything from depot selection to proof of posting. Dead easy.”

Bus Rear Advertising FAQ

Standard bus rear panels start from around £60 per bus for a 2-week cycle, and they cost the same in London as they do in regional cities like Manchester, Birmingham, and Leeds. Mega rears on double-decker buses run on longer terms, from around £5,070 all in for a 20-week run. We send fully itemised quotes with no hidden costs.

A standard bus rear panel is roughly 120cm wide by 75cm high. Mega rears on double-deckers are bigger, around 150cm by 75cm, covering the full width of the bus back. Full wrap rears extend across the entire rear surface including around the windows using perforated vinyl so passengers can still see out. We send artwork templates with exact dimensions once you book.

Simple: it faces following traffic head-on. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians behind the bus stare directly at your ad, often for minutes at a time in stop-start traffic. Route data shows bus rears get some of the highest recall scores of any bus format. Think of it as a mobile 48-sheet billboard sitting at eye level in traffic.

Not specific routes, no. Bus advertising is booked by depot. Each depot serves a set of routes across a defined area. We pick the depots that cover your target postcodes. The upside is that buses rotate routes daily within their depot area, so your ad actually gets wider coverage than it would on a single fixed route.

A standard rear is a printed panel that slots into the advertising frame on the back of the bus. A mega rear is bigger. It uses contour-cut vinyl that wraps around the curves of the bus back, covering much more surface area. Mega rears are only available on double-deckers and run on longer terms from 20 up to 52 weeks. Standard rears are available on 2-week cycles, which makes them far more flexible for shorter campaigns.

For standard bus rears: high-res PDF or TIFF at 1:1 scale, 3mm bleed, minimum 150dpi. For mega rears: half size (1:2) at 300dpi. We send you the exact artwork template for your specific format with safe areas and bleed guides marked up. If you need design help, our team can handle it.

Standard campaigns run in 2-week cycles. You can book back-to-back cycles for 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 3 months, whatever you need. Mega rears run from 20 up to 52 weeks and full wraps have a 4-week minimum. Longer bookings get better rates. For brand awareness, we usually suggest a minimum of 4 weeks to build enough frequency.

Yes to both. The vinyl is weather-resistant and holds up fine in rain, wind, and cold. At night, headlights from cars behind the bus light up your ad like a spotlight. Bus rears are actually one of the few OOH formats that get more visible after dark, not less.

What Our Clients Say

We needed 200 bus supersides across 6 cities in under 3 weeks. Monster sorted the lot, including last-minute artwork changes two days before print. Campaign went live on time and the POE pack was thorough. Will use again.

Rachel Simmons

Media Agency, London

First time running OOH for our brand and the team made it painless. They recommended a mix of tube posters and AdBike activations which we hadn't considered. The tube campaign alone drove a 30% spike in website traffic that week.

David Chen

E-commerce Brand

We've worked with a few outdoor agencies and Monster are the most responsive by far. Quick turnaround on quotes, honest about what works and what doesn't, and the reporting is solid. They handle all our UK OOH now.
